Hotmelts zijn kort te omschrijven als thermoplastische kleefstoffen. Anders dan watergedragen en oplosmiddelen houdende systemen bevatten deze 100% vaste stof. Hotmelts worden ingezet vanwege:

• Hotmelts zijn snel afbindend (bv. minder dan 1 seconde aandrukken)
• Hotmelts hebben een breed hechtingsbereik
• Hotmelts laten zich gemakkelijk verwerken
